Mary Jane GirlsThe ticket was labeled as the Mary Jane Girls, but there was only one original member singing, Candice “Candi” Ghant.
Ghant played the ‘supermodel’ role of the foursome in 1983.
Val Young and Farah Melanson were the other singers performing at the event called the “Magic Under the Stars,” with Young being the lead singer of the “new” MJG. Young also worked closely with Rick James, the founder of the group, so her being the lead singer of the legitimate 2015 MJG was cool.
Maxi & Cheri Wells were both not present at this venue. TMZ reported on November 20, 2013, that the Rick James’ estate sued the two for “… when the group broke up Rick kept the name and the music for himself,” not supporting the two members to use the MJG name.
Regardless of the legalities and missing members, the trio this night performed “on point.”
“Candy Man”, “Boys”, “In My House”, “All Night Long”; were played until the finale of the set, which was James’ “Mary Jane” jam. Chants of the ‘Na Na Na’ portion of the song filled the air, as the burnt-grass smell reminiscent to what the name stood for in 1978.
